Characters that remember, on their own terms
In most chat apps there is one transcript, and every character reads from it. In DreamRunner each character keeps their own memory, written from their point of view. A character who wasn't in the room doesn't know what was said there. One who was lied to acts on the lie. Characters enter and leave scenes, pursue their own goals and react to each other, not just to you.

Every scene gets a picture
Scene illustrations are composed from what is actually in the story: the characters present, their appearance and outfits, the location and the point of view. You pick an art style from thousands in the community, or make your own. Press Depict and the current moment becomes a picture. A character's look stays consistent from scene to scene instead of being reinvented each time.
Voices you describe
Describe a voice in plain language and the AI creates it. Every line can be spoken aloud, with a different voice for each character and the narrator, in 17 languages.
You pick the brain
DreamRunner supports a wide range of text models from providers like Google, Anthropic, DeepSeek, xAI and OpenAI, plus many image models. Custom instructions tell the model how to write. The free tier runs on a simpler model; credits unlock the premium ones.
Your stories stay yours

Where Character.AI still wins
Honestly, Character.AI has a far larger library of ready-made public characters, it is simpler to pick up because it is just chat, and it has native mobile apps. DreamRunner runs in the browser (it works well on phones and can be added to your home screen), and getting the most out of it means spending a few moments setting up a story first. DreamRunner still does have plenty of community stories to play however and it is growing more every day.
