Applying Styles
How to apply custom styles to your characters and locations
Once you've created custom styles, you can apply them to your visual novel at different levels. This guide explains how to use styles effectively.
Style Hierarchy
Styles are applied at two levels, with more specific levels overriding broader ones:
- Story Defaults - Applies to all characters OR all locations in the story
- Entity-Specific - Applies to individual characters or locations (overrides story level styles)
Example:
- Story default: Anime style for all characters
- Entity-specific: Realistic style for the protagonist
- Result: Protagonist uses realistic, others use anime

- While viewing your story, click the Styles button
- Choose between Character and Location tabs (mobile) or view both columns (desktop)
- Browse the different style levels

Understanding Style Priority
When generating images, the system uses this priority order:
- Entity-specific style (if assigned) ← Highest priority
- Story default style (if assigned)
- System default style ← Fallback
Example scenarios:
Scenario 1 - No overrides:
- Story default: Fantasy style
- Character A: (no override)
- Result: Uses fantasy style
Scenario 2 - With override:
- Story default: Fantasy style
- Character A: Realistic style (entity-specific)
- Result: Uses realistic style
Scenario 3 - Mixed:
- Story default: Anime style
- Character A: (no override) → Uses anime
- Character B: Watercolor style → Uses watercolor
- Character C: (no override) → Uses anime

- Test with regeneration before proceeding
For efficiency:
- Apply story defaults for common styles
- Override only key characters/locations
- Reduces credit costs for less important entities
For variety:
- Use different styles for different character types
- Match location styles to mood/theme
- Consider story narrative when choosing styles
